For this one, knitting. The other half is almost the same project, but in crochet. Cast on isn't used in that way in crochet to my knowledge, although the cast on method I use is very very similar to the method I used for doing the first row of the crochet, but I can't remember the name for it.

A group of us are yarn crafting a hundred years of rainfall for a set of locations. Colours are picked for so that there is a scale of 'very dry' (red), through dry (yellow), average (cream), wet (light blue) and 'very wet' (dark blue). Lots of people are knitting, but there is a felted one, and and woven one. This is part of a climate change awareness project.
Normally, I have a crochet project, and a quilting project as my 'active' and a couple of very simple knitting projects as my 'need something that takes no thinking' backups. The two knitting projects are a blanket I'm doing for myself (and have been for several years; it only comes out when I'm at home) and making squares for a friend who assembles blankets -- that is the one that can travel places in my backpack!

It's a great idea to have something small to travel with.Do you use magic loop for that? So the knitting needles take less room. My mum uses that more than regular needles lol, she uses the round needles (idk the english name, you know the ones with a string between them that you usually use for shirts and stuff?
