Birdfeeding

Today is partly sunny and cool.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a large flock of sparrows.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 11/17/25 -- I trimmed brush along the south edge of the house.

#アイビー生誕祭2025

Today is both my DW account's 15th anniversary and my favorite character's birthday.

(#アイビー生誕祭2025 is the official hashtag on Twitter, but I'm not on there. It was used on Bsky last year with less posts... I'll see how it pans out because of timezone differences.)

I'm really sad that 1. my site's shrine is still offline for reasons I can't discuss in public and 2. I have no new art. But I don't draw fanart much at all anymore, and I work today. At least I have my crazy desk shrine, and links to fanart I finished on S7 (click for full view etc). Unfortunately I dislike nearly all of them and they're all old, but that's how it is lol

ETA: I'm going to work in 10 minutes, I changed the gallery code.... ugh....

Nearing the end of another extensive revision round

Hey it's me Mario [personal profile] vriddy... talking about... writing!! Everybody, act surprised!!! Haha. Thanks for indulging on my last post related to this. Rationally I knew it was just my brain being silly but sometimes knowing doesn't help, you have pop that cork by actually getting the stupid thoughts in the sun where they can burn the way they should.

Anyway! I'm nearing the end of this round of cursed witch revisions. Current tally: 87 hours over the last 4 months. That makes it longer than the actual chunky round I called "prose editing" (where I added tons of descriptions and worldbuilding too) which took 81 hours over, huh. Five months. Would have sworn it was 3. So this round will probably end up around 5 months too (to be followed by another round of proofreading in a couple months or so, with all the new stuff I need to look at). However, the work felt a lot nicer overall thanks to allowing chill fic breaks, I think. I still need to be careful how I handle this to avoid Shiny New Project syndrome, but I think that went well.

I basically have the last chapter/epilogue left to edit, as well as the last scene from the previous chapter. The beginning of that penultimate chapter also saw extensive changes that I'm SO EXCITED ABOUT, sets up more worldbuilding and also sets up some of the foundations for the sequel that I'm really really excited to get on with writing hopefully soon.

However, I have to figure out what I want to do with the ending itself. Read more... )

I will absolutely need another set of eyes on this version. Even if I were to change nothing else and leave the epilogue as is, the story leaves the readers with completely different feelings now. Antagonistic(ish) characters that were easy to hate aren't anymore (...I think). I need to understand if this works for other people, too.

Normally after a big round of editing I'm like "THIS IS THE FINAL ONE I AM SO SICK OF IT" but... I'm not totally sure if fixing some of the major issues didn't make formerly minor ones more obvious now, and I'm curious about what's been surfacing *pokes* *pokes* I'll have to see what I think when I'm done for real, and get an external perspective. I think it's also interesting that I believe I would have the stamina for another round (however, no interest in spending another 80+ hours on it). I also like that I'm being more cautious about working on the ending. My previous way of doing things meant that I was so sick of it by the end I always rushed it once the end was in sight. Allowing small mental breaks, but not ones that completely take over (just one or two days here and there) has been really fruitful for my process, I think.

The weather has been variable here. Seen at the birdfeeders this week: a large mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, a male cardinal, a young fox squirrel, and an adult fox squirrel. Most of the flowers have died off. I brought in the ceramic pots. Harvest is pretty much done, except a few random fields that may not get done.

tea review: cozy cinnamon vanilla chamomile

Tea Month 2025: Tea 14

Tea Review
Name: Cozy Cinnamon Vanilla Chamomile
Brand: Stash
Type: herbal
Tea bag

Notes:
Hopefully, I haven't reviewed this tea before. I forgot to double check. This tea was good, but disappointing. It smelled absolutely amazing, but it tasted like chamomile tea, with some slightly warm notes. The more I drank, the more I could also taste the vanilla, but I also think that's because I was looking for it. It is a good tea, but with cinnamon and rooibos as the first two ingredients, I was just expecting something a little spicier.

Oliver's Determination

(Mood: A young man with an unwavering and fiercely determined mindset to destroy the old town in Goldy Pond, and to be rid of the Poachers; a group of demons who terrorize and hunt after him, along with the other orphans who came from various farms who raise and nurture children similar to cattle, to be shipped out to be demon food. Genre: Emo Rock. The singer, Oliver, is seventeen years old.)

Lengthy lyrics under this cut )

This is badass. I think Oliver here is going to be my next new character performer persona. That's a really strong rock vocal.

Tuesday, November 04: Red Rocks

While our weather is (maybe, probably) about to take a turn, we have been granted one of the longest, warmest falls I have ever experienced! (Last week we reached our record for latest snowfall in Denver, and we're still waiting...) I'm certainly not complaining (yes, yes, I know that we need the snow to fend off the fires and all, but were there no consequences I would be happy to literally never see snow again.)

The day got a little late on us, but once we finally got it together, we wanted to go do something to take advantage of the nice weather. We decided on Red Rocks. It's most famous as an enormous outdoor amphitheater used for concerts and such, but does have some hiking trails. Indeed, the several times we hoped to go there earlier this year, there were concerts planned, which limits the hours that you can be in the park for anything else. But that day, finally!

We headed up to a trail we remembered doing before, but not for a few years.

Oof. I remembered the trail, but not how uphill it was. I got wimpy near the end of it and had to stop for a few, which felt really silly when it was less than five minutes from the end. I can go pretty infinitely on flat ground or downhill, but man, the instant there's an incline, I want to die. Still, I recovered, and it's worth the hike.

The red rocks! A nice stretch of the hogback.

Bella got to climb some rocks!

Ten more pictures:
There's a little path to an overlook before the trail itself.

Bella was quite happy that there was this little "raised sidewalk" built specifically for her. (And there's the amphitheater in the background.)

You can see pretty far. Not gonna lie, kinda miss when all those houses weren't there, though.

On the actual trail, a nicely dramatic striped rock.

A deer!

Bella was excited to see the deer.

The deer was not terribly impressed, lol.

I like how stark the aspens are against the rocks. :)

Sometime after this was when I had to sit down for a bit, though after slamming some liquids and catching my breath I was all right.

Up toward the top of the trail is a big, flat stretch of rock which made a good spot for a slightly longer break. It also provides a great spot for Bella to do her favorite thing: rock climbing.

Bella really does seem to love getting to climb. She's excited to roam around the instant she has a chance to.

I really liked this picture of Bella, because the sun made it look like *she* was glowing. Unfortunately, my camera also picked up weird blur on her legs, which make them look super weird, ha.

Looking at the shadow of the rocks there made me think "We have Arches [National Park] at home." Alex called it "Temu Arches," lol.

Cool twisty juniper tree.

I'm glad we had another nice day, and that it synced up with a day that the park was open for hiking. :)

Recs! Seasons of Drabbles Fall 2025 round

I didn't sign up for this round of Seasons of Drabbles, but I had a lovely time browsing the collection yesterday afternoon. Here's a few that I liked (all authors are still anonymous!):

Listening for Something, Alien Movies, Jones the Cat & Ripley, triple drabble, super cute Jonesy POV!

Only One Boot, Discworld, Angua & Cheery, double drabble, Angua and Cheery working together on a snippet of a case - very cute and I appreciate the puns

after the game, Elementary, Joan & Sherlock, single drabble, great character voices and delightful banter

Challenge Accepted, Hawkeye (TV), Yelena/Kate, triple drabble, hot, flirty, stubbornly competitive sparring and target practice

an uninvited visitor, Hawkeye (TV), Yelena & Kate, triple drabble, Yelena demands Kate take her sightseeing - really funny dialogue!

Rumor Has It, Nimona (2023), Ambrosius/Ballister, single drabble, post-canon Ambrosius peruses a magazine article on the "secrets of Gloreth's Champion" - fun flirty banter in this one!

A Mutually Beneficial Arrangement, Star Trek Voyager, B'Elanna/Seven of Nine, drabble sequence, cute and funny fake relationship plot, with some great beats and excellent character voices

Compass, Star Wars Original Trilogy, Leia & Luke, triple drabble, tender moment of acknowledging grief and anger post-The Empire Strikes Back - I like this way of surfacing Leia's force sensitivity

From the Desk of a North American Conservationist, Original Work, Vampire who Rescues Bats & Friendly Monster, triple drabble, an epistolary delight! Super charming voice for the letter-writer, and fun glimpses into chaotic slice of life occurrences

Is it monsterfucking if the tail is out?, Original Work, Male Vampire/Male Werewolf, single drabble, so cute and funny! A vampire accidentally ends up in bed with a very adorable werewolf

Two Conversations at a Cash Register, Original Work, Owner of a Magical Bookstore & Sentient Magical Book, triple drabble, such a charming premise! love the bright and fun narrative voice

Extreme floods are slashing global rice yields faster than expected

Flooding is emerging as a silent but powerful destroyer of global rice supplies—and the danger is accelerating.

Scientists discovered that a week of full submergence is enough to kill most rice plants, making flooding a far greater threat than previously understood. Intensifying extreme rainfall events may amplify these losses unless vulnerable regions adopt more resilient rice varieties

Today is mostly sunny and cool.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 11/16/25 -- We cut down a majority of the brush left in front of the garage.  We'll need to pick up inorganic debris from the ground and do some weedwhacking, and there's a section of brush left to clear.  Two larger stumps are beyond the capacity of the loppers.  But we made a lot of progress, more than I expected.  \o/

EDIT 11/16/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 11/16/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

EDIT 11/16/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

I pulled weeds from around the birdgift apple tree, filled a trolley, and dumped that in the firepit.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

I really do need to more private journaling...

Every time I do it, I feel nothing but relief for being able to release some of my pent-up thoughts and feelings without bothering anyone, and it also seems to help with my issues with rumination to an extent.

I also find it strangely more satisfying to do it digitally on the computer rather than via a paper journal. I wonder why...
