So I mostly knit and crochet with acrylics, as that is all I can afford. I do have some wool items, but only a few. One of the wool items is a shawl that I drooled over for years until I finally had the money to buy the yarn to make it.
I've only worn the shawl a few times. When I was putting it away a while back, I noticed what looked like a tear in the fabric. I thought maybe it had come from the pin I had used, so I didn't think too much of it at the time.
Well, I recently came into some money, so I thought about buying more yarn to repair the tear. So I pulled the shawl out of the drawer I had been storing it in... And it's got more holes in it.
Obviously bugs have gotten to it. I'm rather upset. I'm probably going to be throwing it away, and I am sick at the thought of losing all that hard work, along with the money spent on the yarn.
Two more wool items I knit also have bug damage. Those I am less concerned about; the yarn is gorgeous (malabrigo!) But the finished items were too small and never used.
My very best beaded shawl appears to have escaped being damaged. It's currently in the freezer (along with a pair of wool mittens sent to me by an international friend) to kill any bugs that might be on it. We've also obtained some boric acid we're going to use in my room to hopefully kill any bugs remaining.
But this has made me fearful of using wool in the future, which is a shame because I actually do like wool. I was just about to order some fingering weight wool to make a pair of mittens that's been on my wish list for years. That's on hold now.
