Cross Stitch Question

Hey all! I'm working on my first ever cross stitch, and I have run into a place where I realized I wanted some other opinions if possible. My issue is letters. Or more specifically, lines of vertical stitching.
My pattern has a bunch of places that are vertical lines of single stitches. Should I stitch all the way up and then back down? Because I can't do full xs since my next stitch above pulls out the one below...
Any help is appreciated! Thank you!

I find it easier to go all the way up on one arm of the x and then back down with the other. It keeps the tension even!
