This week I used my Malayan tapir sticker in the hopes of summoning the tapir at the zoo. It worked!

This week was pretty good. I did get a lot of my intended goals done. We had a good time on my days off, and while work felt extremely busy, it was fine. I did get some writing done, though on reviews and goal-setting, not on fiction. I was glad that I finished a couple books, even if I did so at the very end of the month! Bella had a good week, in that she got two new AKC titles: the first level of Canine Good Citizen and the first level for Trick Dog. The week felt quite productive overall, though there are a few things I should try harder to do next week.

Goals for the week:

  • I did finish reading Night's Edge
  • I wrote up my reviews of the books I read in July
  • I did my [community profile] getyourwordsout check in: 5260 words written in July, bringing my ytd to 76077, which means I've hit my goal of 75k written (just very little has been on fiction writing)
  • We visited the zoo
  • We signed our lease for the next year (even if the rent increase makes me want to cry)
  • I put my laundry away
  • I made some necessary phone calls
  • I sort of started updating my reading page, but didn't get very far
  • I did look at the OTW election candidates, reading their platforms and their Q&As
  • I did not work on my idea inventory
  • I put together my August tracking grids
  • I stopped by my mom's house
  • I started reading Uprooted
  • I set my writing goals for August
  • I cleaned up Berry Mad's pond and plant

Tracked habits:

  • Work - 5/7
  • Household Maintenance - 4/7
  • Physical Activity - 2/7
  • Wrote 500/1000+ Words - 2/7 - one day of over 1000, one day of over 500
  • Wrote on 2nd+ Draft - 0/7
  • Meta Work - 7/7
  • Personal Writing - 6/7
  • Other Creative Things - 3/7
  • Reading - 7/7 - mostly I read Nights Edge, but I also finished my ebook side read, Alex and I read some Duma Key, I started Uprooted, and my new ebook side read A Queen Rises
  • Attention to Media - 7/7 - Sunday had some youtube video essays in the background, then later storm chase and exploration videos, and I caught up on Re: Dracula; Monday was more storm chase and exploration videos in the background and a very short Re: Dracula; Tuesday another short Re: Dracula, and the watching news coverage of the huge earthquake near Russia and the potential for tsunami afterwards; Wednesday we watched Drop, which was fine but a bit silly, Last Night in Soho, which I really like, and Coherence, which I'd seen before, and is a decent low-budget thing; Thursday we watched 1BR which was an okay horror, and Triangle which I think is better than people give it credit for, but I do love fucked up timeloops; Friday listened to Re: Dracula and had storm and exploration videos in the background; Saturday some youtube in the background, a short Re: Dracula, more storm and paranormal videos, and listened to music.
  • Video Games - 0/7
  • Social Interaction - 6/7

Total words written: 4441 words written on reviews and intended plans for August

I know I've got nothing
Except plastic
Now I'm running
Going straight to the cashport
Slip it in
Get it, grive
Pressin' on bucks now
Feelin' with it, gonna win
First world competition
I even get a guarantee

Oh ho ho
I love to consume
All these buyings
Got me stayin' in tune

We got a French's cops
Wavy old paletot
See me wreck it
Brown anthrax mountain slicker
One for the money
Two for the show
Betta bend over
You'll go go go

Buy buy a new obsession
Buy buy your own cremation
Buy buy a new complexion
Buy buy a permanent erection

I want more
I want it all
I want to get what I'm looking for
I want a pound of lead
A pound of flesh
A pound of hate
A pound of diffident

Cry now, we fry later
Gonna buy now, pay later
Put the pedal to the metal
The metal to the floor
The floor to the people
Cause the people want more

Buy buy a little fixation
Buy buy a little sensation
Buy buy a new complexion
Buy buy a permanent erection
Buy buy a good luck charm
You can buy buy a plastic arm
Buy buy a new obsession
Buy buy your own cremation
Buy buy a new fixation
Buy buy a permanent erection
Buy buy a mind expansion
On peace, love, and destruction

I'll get a new dog
A many-mix
A Harley made
Vacuum cleaner
Rubber doll
Header sofa
Motorbike
Swedish sauna
Smartline polaroid
Drugs that make you paranoid
Facelift
Silicone goatee
Motor phone
Buy now, pay later
Gonna cry now, fry later

Oh ho ho

All these buyings
Get in like a high noon

Buy buy

This song aged like fine wine...

Book Review: The Bell Jar

Another book? Yup, another book

Title: The Bell Jar
Author: Sylvia Plath
Genre: Fiction

Characters: 6.5
Atmosphere/Setting: 6
Writing: 8
Plot: 7
Intrigue: 6
Logic/Relationships: 5
Enjoyment: 6

=43.5/7 = 6.2 = 3 Stars

It was decent. Nothing spectacular, but not bad, either. I think it got so much attention because mental health was such a taboo subject during the 60s, so an insider look was titillating. I've read better novels about being mentally unwell and going through the process of getting better. I don't think this book did a good job of showing the actual healing, though. Her characterization seemed pretty constant.

I swear I meant to also write this one earlier and then you know. Time. It expands.

There's stuff I think I want to blog about, but I'm kind of percolating it all for now... Expect some extreme yapping at some point. For now, I finished making myself a new Meet the Artist in pixel art!! It was so fun to work on, so much fun in fact that I didn't even do any webdev today LMAO. It's okay... The week is still young...

Posting art counts as blogging, right... Actually, it's my blog, so I can choose to say that it is. So there.

This is the actual size (250x200 pixels) but if you click on it, you can see the x4 version, which should be easier to read haha. Anyway, apart from adding my cats and some jokes, it's not really a huge departure from my usual Meet the Artist... It's not like my tastes vary hugely from year to year, nor does the general information I can give about me. I guess my location is different, at least!!!

I want to draw more pixel art...

[Major Tom, a big grey tabby, is hunkered down behind one of my display boxes in the booth. He’s got one forepaw stretched out in front of himself, and the tip of his tongue is sticking out. My hand is resting on the table in front of him, forefinger tipped slightly up in hopes of a boop.]

Towards the middle of Battlemoor Tom realized that there was room on top of the tables for a tomcat. So, of course, he started spending time on top of the tables.

The ideal spot was right behind a display box, usually, & with part of himself tucked under the bottom shelf. Perfect for petting, sheltered enough he couldn’t be grabbed.

2025 07 04 18.44.51

[He’s settled, a bit, and is sniffing one of the shelf uprights, preparatory to giving it a good headrub.]

He marked everything in the vicinity, of course — with his front end; SO glad he stopped spraying when I got him fixed — & left little dirty cat pawprints on the white silk tablecloths.

2025 07 04 18.44.54

[He’s turned his head, and is now rubbing his face against the price sign on the display box in front of him. A couple of dirty little pawprints are visible past him, under the table.]

Having claimed everything in sight, including me, it was, apparently, time to settle.

2025 07 04 18.45.22

[He’s flopped now, both forepaws out in front of himself. He looks very pleased with his life.]

& then, it was time for a love.

2025 07 04 18.45.03

[His head is stuck out, resting on one of my fingers, while the others give him a good chin scritch. One eye is wide open, the other is squinched halfway shut; his whiskers are perked forwards while his ears stick out at various angles. He is extremely happy.]

Then there were customers, which is how this goes.

The 31-year-old electrical engineer says poor reception is a common frustration for residents of Vermont's Orange County. To address this issue, he's providing his community with a new way to stay connected.

Schlott has taken old pay phones, modified them to make free calls, and set them up in three different towns across the county. He buys the phones secondhand from sites like eBay and Craigslist and restores them in his home workshop
.

I've always said that dismantling pay phones was dangerous, because even if most people have cell phones, those can be lost, broken, or out of service. It's nice to see this public good reviving in at least some areas.

Today is mostly clouding and mild, a beautiful day.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, a mourning dove, and a fox squirrel.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 8/5/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 8/5/25 -- I did more work around the patio.

I checked the new picnic table and septic garden.  No new vegetables to pick, but multiple zinnias are now blooming in shades of red and red-violet.  :D  Also the first of the giant sunflowers are blooming there.

Among my more relevant series for the main theme:

An Army of One involves education and reading in the Lacuna.

Arts and Crafts America focuses on fine arts and practical crafts, sometimes education. Bookbinding would be a logical craft.

The Bear Tunnels has future books in a past culture.

Daughters of the Apocalypse have to rediscover many historic skills for survival, including earlier methods of sharing knowledge.

Frankenstein's Family has two scientists teaching villagers to be thoughtful instead of stupid, and after a few years, several more people keenly interested in books and education.

Not Quite Kansas started with mishandling a book of spells, and involves trying to learn about a whole new world.

Path of the Paladins includes the Canticle of Thorns and other books.

Peculiar Obligations has Quakers in organized crime. The Religious Society of Friends has been greatly involved in education, including abolitionist and natural science publications.

Polychrome Heroics is largely about people learning things. Threads particularly focused on this include Antimatter and Stalwart Stan, Aquariana, the Big One, Danso and Family, Dr. Infanta, Iron Horses, Officer Pink, Rutledge, and Trichromatic Attachments.

Quixotic Ideas is set in a world with plenty of magic and a positive tone, where people often help each other and solve challenges peacefully. It includes a healthy magical school.

Schrodinger's Heroes save the world from alternate dimensions, and they learn a lot along the way.

Or you can ask for something new.

Anyway, you can read it over here.

Bonus, adding my face cosplaying Izumo no Takeru for the 20 year anniversary of the release of the manga. Minus his tattoos cus I was short on time.

Bob’s Birthday Ice Cream

Bob: my birthday’s in two weeks, and Rogan asked what I wanted. My response? All the food I am not allowed to eat in my old, bad-heart body. Fried food, desserts, fat and sweets and flavors.

Today, he was at the ice cream shop, and one of the specials was Xtabentun coffee ice cream with anise/honey liqueur. Coffee and booze: my favorite combination! (And wasted on these kids; Falcon is the only one in this place who appreciates a decent cup of coffee asides from me.)

I staked my birthday claim early. I got my ice cream. Oh, it was an experience to be savored, for sure! Best ice cream I’ve ever had... and their body can take it no problem.

Happy early birthday to me!
