I just got down from working on the roof of the tinker's wagon, after taking the last three days off from that project to do basically everything else I haven't been getting round to & also napping a lot.
Bout to take another nap, too. Construction work is TIRING.
I'm rereading where the firelight fades (tweaking as I go) preparatory to finishing the last scene of ch 7 and heading into the final chapter
so some shit went down in the comments of another nonbinary Miraculous Ladybug author's fic featuring an explicitly nonbinary character
I am pretty sure I have decided to make one of the two firelight PoV characters also explicitly nonbinary (or, well, both of the two, but I am being subtle about the other one); problem is I'm already 45K deep in a draft that assumes this character is a cis girl and that's a fuckton of pronouns
Nonbinary characters are amazing and I fully support that decision while ALSO being extreeeeemely sympathetic about the Pronoun-Switching Debacle. My thoughts go with you :)
The personal neo-pronoun most used by the non-binary people surveyed is "iel" (50% by counting the spelling variations). The use of this same pronoun to designate a person whose gender is unknown or a group of people of different genders (iels in the plural) seems to be already a consensus. The use of "iel / iel / lae" is therefore strongly recommended on official documents and other written productions.
I am consequently much happier about going through to fix all the pronouns so that Alya is explicitly and obviously nonbinary and I don't even have to say anything about it except that Alya uses singular 'they' pronouns. 'Cause I'm picky about that shit:
The fourth text of the night looks nonsensical. "She's what now?" Chat asks: if Nino meant 'crazy' (which hasn't been news since Stoneheart anyway), he'd say 'elle folle', not 'elle fou'.
"xkcd 246," says Alya. "Knights and Knaves—" (The nouns are in English.) "—or, you know, fucked." Okay, yeah, Nino could have sent the text partway into 'fourbe' or any of various forms of 'foutre', and he certainly didn't mean 'chevalier'.
And this is the story where I changed a plot point rather than rely on the ambiguity of English 'cannot', because French for 'not able to' and French for 'not permitted to' sound nothing alike! So.
…four already-drafted scenes checked and fixed, twenty-four to go, counting the partially drafted scene as a full one and not counting the at least five scenes of the final (and thoroughly undrafted) chapter at all…
Steeking is when you knit colorwork in the round with a few extra stitches in one spot, then you cut your knitting to produce a flat piece. It was kind of scary, and I only did a so-so job, but I'm still proud of myself for accomplishing it!
Also been working on a crocheted sweater. Here's the pattern page: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/gansey-sweater My yarn is a dark rose heather in color. Pretty! My swatch indicated that the yarn fluffs up when washed, quite a bit. So as I'm working on the sweater it looks holey, but those holes should mostly disappear with the first wash.
Otherwise, I've been playing a lot of video games. I managed to craft an orchestrion for my house in Final Fantasy XIV and I'm very excited about it. I basically just did crafting for a month in order to level up enough to make it. Didn't party for that entire month! I'm now back to partying since my crafting goals were met.
I have been really enjoying spinning on my spindle. Instead of proper roving I am using roving type yarn that I got for free at work. It spins fairly well and I love the color changes!
Also J finally talked me into getting a Sous vide, so our first sous vide dinner is cooking. Steak with butter, garlic and herbs. Plus mashed potatoes and roasted squash.
I finished my hip wallet just in time for my trip and the first time I used it the button fell off. Lesson: use real thread to sew on buttons, not yarn.
Now I'm working on a striped afghan because I have lost my everlovin' mind.
I spent most of the weekend visiting a friend, which I really needed. :) Now I'm back home and am picking at some scenes of a new writing collab I'm working on. It's pretty crack-heavy, which is not my strong suit at all, but it's really fun and I love working on projects with other creators!
(I'm also making pasta salad, which I hope very much will be good!)
